Livestock GM Checklist - For a complete Gross Margin Calculation
Calculations for livestock are made on a per flock/herd basis; per breeding female basis and per hectare basis.
You will need to select your:
Country, currency, livestock type
(sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, camels or chickens)
Mountain or lowland; Irrigated or rainfed, and the husbandry type (nomadic/transhumant or settled).
In addition you will need the following data to be entered on a quarterly or annual basis.
Breeding females, males used for breeding, female replacements (those that you are not breeding from this season), males kept for fat and store and, where relevant, any males used for draught and pack.
The numbers of opening stock and closing stock for each of the livestock categories, as well as the total number of breeding females being used for production that season.
In terms of off-spring, you should also enter live births; numbers still born and the number weaned.
Feed Input Costs
Unit price for concentrates, forages and number of kilograms consumed during the year for each category of stock.
Water Input Costs
Unit price of water and number of litres consumed during the year for each category of stock (if available) or proportional allocation.
Labour Input Costs
Price per day of adult and child labour during the year and the number of days worked for each category of stock.
Health Input Costs
Price per unit treatment/dose of drugs and vaccinations and number of units used for each category of stock during the year.
Other Input Costs
Other input costs should be itemised separately and unit price and quantity data entered.
Livestock Input Costs
Costs per head of purchased stock and the number of head for each category. Only costs associated with (replacement) stock purchased that season should be included, not the value of the opening stock.
There are 5 separate output tables you can enter the output type at the top of each table. Include price per unit (e.g. of head, meat, milk, wool, eggs etc.) and numbers of units sold, eaten, given away or in-store for each category during the year.
